NEWFOUNDLAND KARATE ASSOCIATION DOJOS
MUN Shotokan Karate. Taught by Sensei Dr. David Bell (6th Dan) and Sensei Paul Bell (6th Dan). Classes are taught Tuesdays (6-7:30pm)and Fridays (6-7pm) Combat Room in the new PowerPlex Centre on Crosbie Road. You can contact them via email dbell@mun.ca. The Goulds/Calvert/Shea Heights Shotokan Karate. Under the leadership and instruction of Sensei Wayne Lee (6th Dan ) classes are taught at St. Kevin's Parish Hall in the Goulds on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm for Juniors and 8:00pm-9:30 for Seniors. In Calvert, Sensei Lee is assisted by Sempai Cliff Kenny (3rd Dan) with classes taking place at Calvert Hall (Northside Road) on Thursdays from 6:30-8:00pm for Juniors and 8:00pm-9:30 for Seniors. Mundy Pond Shotokan Karate. Taught by Sensei Bruce Lee (6th Dan). Located at The School for the Deaf on Topsail Road, the gym entrance, Monday & Thursday, 6:00pm-7:00pm for Juniors and 7:30pm-9:00pm for Seniors. There are no Junior classes during July and August (summer schedule) but Senior classes continue on both nights from 7:30pm-9:00. Marystown Shotokan Karate In 1991 RCMP Cst.Dan MacDonald started the Shotokan Karate Club in Burin, at Jameison Academy. In 1997 Cst. Macdonald got transfered out of the province and Tony Fitzpatrick who was a brown belt at the time asumed the role of sensei.Today the club has approximately 14 Black Belts and two colored belts. The club also has approximately 35 kids enrolled in its junior program from White up to Brown Belt. The Chief Instructor is Tony Fitzpatrick Sandan, 3rd degree Black Belt. Tony works under the general guidance of Sensei Bruce Lee. Assistant Instructors for adult classes are: Tom Riley Nidan, 2nd degree Black Belt Gerard Kelly, Nidan, 2nd degree Black Belt. Assist Instructors for junior classes are: Cynthia Broaders Nidan, 2nd degree Black Belt Jim Manning Shodan, 1st degree Black Belt. Classes are held at Jameison Academy across from the hospital in Salt Pond,Burin. Junior Classes 6:30pm on Monday evenings. Adult Classes 7:30pm on Monday & Thursday. Trinity Shotokan Karate. Kevin and Janet Price offer Shotokan Karate training at their Clarenville area Dojo. The Dojo is located at the St. Jones Within Community Centre, Trinity Bay Newfoundland and Labrador. Kevin started training with Bruce Lee Sensei in Grand Falls Windsor in 1994 and continued training with Lee Sensei at his Dojo in St. John's in 2002 and has earned a 2nd Dan Black Belt. Janet Price has trained with Lee Sensei in St. John's since 2002 and has earned a Brown Belt. They have recently moved to St. Jones Within and have opened their Dojo to continue regular training and development as well as to teach Shotokan to others. Class times are Mondays and Thursdays, 6:00pm to 7:00pm for children under 16, 7:15pm to 8:45pm for adults and senior teens. Bruce has a 1st degree black belt in Judo and a 3rd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. Sensei Bruce is a nationally-certified Judo Coach and a Provincial Referee in both Judo and Karate. He has current memberships in Judo Canada (#130788), the Newfoundland & Labrador Judo Association, the Newfoundland Karate Association (#0020), the Newfoundland & Labrador Karate Union, the Coaching Association of Canada (#CC1044511), and the National Coaching Certification Program. Class times are Karate at Wedgewood Park Community Centre Sunday evenings 7:30-9:30pm and Judo at Mews Centre Saturday Mornings 10am-Noon. All students practicing and participating in Dojos of the Newfoundland Karate Association must pay an small annual membership fee to the Newfoundland Karate Association to help offset the costs of maintaining the Association, costs of running tournaments and the cost of insurance for individual participants and the association.
